Rodin later worked under fellow sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and took on a major project assigned to him in Brussels, Belgium. The origins of the sculpture can be traced to 1880, when Rodin, who had been born in a working-class district of Paris as the son of a police clerk, was approaching 40. Many of the portal's figures became sculptures in themselves, including Rodin's most famous, The Thinker and The Kiss. He married his lifelong companion, Rose Beuret, in the last year of both their lives.
