Medical and fitness professionals are often presented with special populations to work with, to include persons diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). According to the CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network, 1 in 44 children has been diagnosed with ASD. The likelihood becomes much higher fitness professionals will interact with clients having ASD because this is the future adult population. Although ASD is a neurodevelopment disorder, there are social communication and restrictive and/or repetitive behaviors that can influence physical activity among this population. Furthermore, obesity rates have been found to be higher in those with ASD (30.4%) compared to those without ASD (23.6%). This is in accordance with the rates of physical activity being lower in persons with ASD compared to those without ASD.
This special population requires individualized attention during exercise. Having the skills to inclusively train persons with sensory and behavioral needs is important to help persons with ASD benefit from effective exercise programs, enjoy their experiences, and be able to find exercise as an outlet and healthy activity in an effort to help deter sedentary lifestyle habits and lower the obesity rate among this population. This course is designed for anyone seeking education, certification, and the tools to work with persons with ASD in the exercise/fitness setting.
Fitness professionals are an integral extension of Phase III-IV cardiac rehab programs. We coach the client to move and perform better in their game of life, beyond their cardiac history, co-morbidities and risk factors. People don’t live to be safe and healthy; they live safer and healthier to live life to the fullest.
Our coaching transfers to real life outside the gym, and that’s why people seek out our services. So for those with a cardiac history, our goal is to fortify their body, mind and spirit, so that they CAN live, labor, work, caregive, play and compete with confidence, competence and automaticity in their environments of choice. We bolster their buffer, boosting their protective factors, while adding purpose to living life and enhancing all aspects of well-being.
Pat VanGalen will help you fine-tune your coaching skills, due diligence practices, intake info, screening/assessments and programming systems to optimize living life for this client. Beyond FITT and Rx, case studies addressing common cardiac conditions, meds and co-morbidities will be presented, along with Pat’s 7 S’s approach to building resilience, durability and robustness for the long haul.

Sports related injuries are some of the most common injuries in the United states. They are not limited to one age group, gender or ethnicity. They are seen across the board in high caliber athletics, youth leagues, gym training or the common weekend warrior. However, some will need medical and/or surgical intervention in the form of injections (corticosteroid or PRP/StemCell), Arthroscopy of the Knee, Shoulder, & Hip. Many lay people can take in the statistics and realization that obesity is crippling our society both financially and spiritually. It is crippling society literally and figurately! There are many physiological and biochemical principles in operation that have very negative effects on the physical and mental capacities of those afflicted with this disease. Having the proper mindset or paradigm for countering obesity is absolutely critical to have any success.
The metabolic facets of visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and the dreaded “metabolic syndrome” and the many clinical problems associated with it, are discussed in this course. We’ll discuss how higher intensity exercise actually targets VAT better, but it needs to be done in appropriate quantities to avoid injury and burn out. We’ll also discuss some of the principles of biochemistry and how what we eat not only has calories, but there are endocrine, metabolic, and even psychological factors affected by what we put in our mouth. The idea of starving oneself is perhaps the worst strategy one could use to counter obesity. It is important to understand what to eat as well as what to avoid to reduce VAT, and improve function.
A very comprehensive assessment protocol has been developed for this course, which includes anthropometric, eating, fitness, and clinical factors. “Coaching” could likely be the most important module in this program and any program that you are trying to get a “transformation” or change in someone’s lifestyle. The capacity to both listen to what the individual wants, and understanding the way they think is absolutely critical to opening them up for new perspectives and new habits. The exercises in this course are only the tip of the iceberg in what can be done to get an obese client moving, nourishing, and thinking like a thinner person.
This course will introduce the practitioner to Obesity, and the important links in the comprehensive process of being a weight management specialist. The trainer needs to understand the “why” something is being done, much more than “what” is being done, or how it is performed. The program should always be evolving to be more personalized, practical, and precise in meeting the needs, likes, and dislikes of that client.
The Fitness Industry is ever-evolving with programs to meet the needs of adults, but what about our younger population? There is a lack of versatile exercise programming to meet the developmental changes and needs of youth and adolescent clients.
This course is exploration of adolescent psychological and anatomical development to inform proper and sustainable exercise and nutritional programming measures for the younger population. Learn basic guidelines for adolescent nutrition and exercise parameters to encourage healthy wellness behaviors and decrease vulnerability to chronic diseases. This course presents opportunities for developing professional fitness and nutritional programming to meet the needs of the adolescent clientele.
