After retiring, while teaching ESL, she began learning Chinese in order to better communicate with her students. During high school, Florence participated in orchestra, pep band and choir, several clubs and was editor of the school paper for two years. Praying to Mary helped her make the decision about religious life. It was a combination church and school. She made her first profession of vows on August 12, 1948.
