Focal Length: The focal length is the distance, given in millimeters, from the primary mirror to the point where the light rays come together in focus. With all these properties within one telescope, it's easy to see why RCs are extremely desirable among researchers and advanced astrophotographers. The Mark III 1.25 in nosepiece is a bit small . For catadioptric telescopes like the Schmidt-Cassegrain, knowing the focal length is not a clue to the tube length since the optical path is folded to create a more portable telescope. There are several characteristics you will want to pay attention to when buying a telescope, including Aperture: An old adage about choosing the best telescope goes like this: "Buy the biggest telescope you can afford that you can set up by yourself and will use" While there is obviously a bit more to it than that, this is wise advice because it is a fact that the bigger the diameter of the primary optics, the more you will see. These are the largest optical/IR telescopes in the world. Building a mirror this large is challenging, even for use on the ground. It is common to find fast imaging Newtonian reflectors for sale as optical tube assemblies only, allowing the astro-imager to use his choice of equatorial mount. The focal ratio is calculated by dividing the aperture (mm) of the primary mirror or lens into the focal length. On the high end, RCs are more expensive because they use a hyperbolic primary mirror design. You can watch our video on how to collimate a high-end Ritchey-Chretin here." In fact, the EdgeHD focal plane is 3 times flatter than a standard SCT! EdgeHD telescopes are great for visual use but they really shine for astrophotography. About Orion Telescopes & Binoculars. "name": "Can I use a Ritchey Chretien telescope for visually observing the night sky? Their designs are a direct result of suggestions received from professional astronomers, engineers and amateur stargazers. However, if you want to do astrophotography, your Newtonian reflector needs an equatorial mount. The lack of refractive lens elements allows this telescope design to detect wavelengths broader the visual spectrum making them very useful for measurements in the ultraviolet (UV), near-infrared (NIR), and infrared (IR) wavelengths. I can get useful astrometry at 19th mag and photometry at 18th with longer integration. Yes, as with all reflector designs, RCs do need to be collimated and usuallysomewhatfrequently. Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes use a folded light path design to keep the tube assembly portable for their aperture. A Schmidt-Cassegrain, which belongs more broadly to the Catadioptric telescope type, uses a folded optical design incorporating both mirrors and lenses to gather and bring the light to focus. Standard extension from 1 meter to 2 meters. We recommend the Apertura AD 8" Dobsonian for its quality and included accessories. We will be glad to help. I've seen little or no 'useful' work done with an amateur scope in the 1m aperture range but if the cash is available why not. Folks who want to look at the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter occasionally but who are not interested in photography would do perfectly well with a medium-sized refractor on a simple quality alt-azimuth mount, whereas those who want to do photography would require an equatorial mount with either computerization or dual axis motor drive. A Dobsonian telescope is a good example of a simple alt-azimuth design.
